Flavor Buffet

Happy Friday, all! This week was a busy blur of work, workouts, baking, and staying organized so that our long weekend could begin stress-free - as it aught to be. 😎

This week’s picks include some travel suggestions, a splash of nostalgia, quirky kitchen dealings, business adventures, and more! Plus, a few recipes to keep you busy this weekend.

Hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day!

1. It’s around this time of year when I start to really “ache” for warm weather and consistent sunshine. But winter isn’t quite over yet! Here’s a guide to a far warmer place than here that’s also filled with history: Oakland, California. The author takes us to all of her favorite spots and describes why she loves her hometown so much.

Have you been to Oakland? I have not yet traveled to this cool city, but now it’s definitely on my list!

2. While I personally have never found being left-handed to be that much of an inconvenience (I love being a lefty!), I also have never worked in a professional kitchen. Apparently most are made with right-handed folks in mind!

From drawers to appliances to knives, every aspect of working in a restaurant kitchen tends to skew toward the right-handers of the world (the majority). Check out this piece all about how the left-handed handle it all in kitchens suited for everyone else.

3. Do you remember the first time you were allowed to stay home alone? Was it as glorious as you had hoped? For me, being home alone (rare) often meant picking whatever I wanted to watch on TV and enjoying a giant bag of Doritos all to myself. What a life!

Read this sweet piece about the author’s early experiences being home alone and how certain memories really do stick with us for the long run.

4. Part of what I love about watching Great British Baking Show is being supremely impressed with the contestants and joyfully sitting on my couch not participating in the challenges. However, what if we did try one of those technical challenges? I have a feeling the end result, for me at least, would be a creation far less superior than my hopes and filled with many tears of frustration.

The author of this piece did just that - she made one of the technical challenge cakes! And to me, it looked great! The process, however, seemed to be far trickier than any of the episodes we watched ever let on.

5. If I were to ever own and run my own business, I think I’d welcome the help/assistance of my husband (especially if we were co-owners). That could be fun! Making business decisions together could be exciting, challenging, and rewarding.

Read on to find out what it’s “really like” to manage a business with your significant other. I love the palpable camaraderie you can sense in each of these couples’ responses. They’re in it (business and life) together!

Bonus!

OMG. Chef’s Table, season six, returns to Netflix on Feb. 22 and the group looks awesome. Have you been watching this excellent series? I now have my Friday night plans set a week in advance. 😏

Snacks!

Who cares that Valentine’s Day is in the past? I’m still planning to make this Fudgy Flourless Chocolate Cake in the near future. And I’m sure we will love it!

For the time being we are working hard on making healthier dinners. This Butternut Squash Parmesan looks to be the perfect (and delicious) weeknight addition; and it’s much more conducive to our current menu mindset.

Honestly, with a title like Candy Pork, what more is there to say? Adding this dish to a future meal plan, now.

Have a great weekend!
