Flavor Buffet

Just on a slight delay here, folks, but thank you for bearing with me.  Amidst mugs of hot water with lemon (who am I?) and feeling colder than I should indoors, I perused the ‘net to find this little bunch of (end of) weekend-reading goodness for you.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to grab a blanket and settle in to watch a hearty dose of Netflix. After I re-read these articles, of course. ;)

1. Out of all the baking tools I’m slowing acquiring, one that hasn’t yet made its way into my kitchen is the offset spatula. Known for being a key “ingredient” when it comes to frosting cakes, this baker’s essential needs a spot in my tool drawer ASAP. But wait - there’s a mini version too?! I’ll add that to my cart as well. The mini offset spatula seems to be even more important!

2. Never one to turn down a classic dessert, I will almost certainly never say no to a slice of cheesecake. Isn’t it great? I just love the creamy flavor and decadent nature of cheesecake - it’s always delicious. Here’s a twist on this sweet and savory dessert that seems to show that with very similar ingredients and perhaps a fair amount less effort, you can enjoy a slice of an “anti-cheesecake,” but enjoy it all the same. I’m in!

3. Funny how we can take for granted some of the most “basic” of kitchen appliances... The humble rice cooker is a workhorse and I happily admit life’s much easier with it being in our kitchen. Well, not all of life, just dinnertime. When dinner requires rice. 😉

4. Is it strange to enjoy looking at kitchen pantry makeovers? Oh well. I love a good before-and-after and this set of pantry makeovers, seems that everyone is on that Tidying Up train, makes me excited for the day when we actually have a kitchen pantry to keep clean. 😉

5. This piece came out a week earlier, but I’ve just gotten around to reading it in detail. I’m glad I did! This one is all about how to handle…dietary restrictions! How to prepare for a dinner party when guests may have allergies/restrictions/foods they won’t eat.

It’s an interesting discussion, but here’s the bottom line: always ask up front! And if you have a severe allergy/issue (i.e. celiac) make sure to let your host know ahead of time. It’s the right thing to do!

Bonus!

Aside from eating lunch at my desk sometimes, it’s pretty rare that I eat a meal entirely on my own. And if we’re being honest, I think I’ve only eaten alone at a restaurant maybe…three times? Ever? The math is fairly fuzzy on that one. But what do you think about eating alone? Do you enjoy it? Or does it bring more anxiety than confidence?

Dining alone is increasing at an alarming rate in Korea, which in turn is having an effect on the act in the US. Read on for more details and examples of why this trend may just be the best way to enjoy your dinner.

Snacks!

Because even when I’m not actually that hungry, and feeling pretty blah, I can muster the energy to get excited about food…

We haven’t made queso in a while and I think it’s time for that to change. This recipe looks very promising!

Potato skins bring back all sorts of  delicious memories. Who wouldn’t enjoy these crispy potatoes loaded with cheese and bacon?

Even the most basic of snacks, popcorn, can be a featured item at a party. Try this recipe for an enhanced take on the crunchy classic.

Thank you for reading!
