Flavor Buffet: August, vol. III
Happy Friday, everyone!
Despite the intense heat and humidity of this week, it’s scheduled to pass just in time for the weekend which is fantastically perfect timing. I’m in the mood to get outside and not sweat through my clothes within minutes of leaving the apartment.
I’m also in the mood to start considering clothing that has sleeves… jackets! Remember those? Oh summer, I adore you, but Jacket Season isn’t too far away and that makes me pretty excited. I also wouldn’t mind starting to seek out recipes that require considerable time in the oven. 😏
For now, let’s continue to enjoy August because we all know December will suddenly show up and we will be aching for the heat.
Have a great weekend!

Bon Appétit launched a Shop! Check it out and let me know which t-shirt you’re ordering or which baseball hat may need to be added to your closet. I have my eye on a few items…
To the fans of flavored coffee, I hear you! And while nowadays I prefer mine unflavored, I do remember when it had to be French vanilla or nothing. Read this piece on why someone just loves their flavored cup of joe and why it shouldn’t be a problem for anyone else.
A recipe in the read section? Insane. But it’s happening. Grab that local corn before it’s gone and make this Chilled Corn Soup with Lobster Salad. It seems like the best, and slightly extravagant, way to toast the season and say “until next year” to summer…

Apparently it’s Food52’s 10th birthday (wow) and they’re sharing their top ten “most popular recipes of all time” on the site. Here are a few I’d love to try…
Magical, Marvelous, Memorable Cookies - you know I love a great cookie recipe to add to my arsenal.
Momofuku’s Soy Sauce Eggs - these sound intriguing and awesome and easy to make gluten free.
Marcella Hazan’s Tomato Sauce with Onion and Butter - I am always excited by a new, flavorful tomato sauce. This one sounds divine.
And for dessert…
I haven’t been baking lately, horrors I know, but perhaps the fall will inspire me. I’ve bookmarked this Any Berry Galette because I could easily make it with end-of-summer fruit or wait a few weeks and make it a fall-special. We shall see!

I know you want my next NYC guide. I do too. But free time is very special to me so these days my weekends, when I’d have the time to write a lot (the guide!), I have been opting for more leisurely activities or time away from technology. I’ve noticed I’m far more relaxed when I take chunks of time away from using screens. No surprise there!
In the meantime, why not go out to eat?!
Tavern in the Square -we find ourselves here for the sports bar atmosphere and easy menu. I must admit their GF pizza (cauliflower crust) is really delicious.
Uni - we went here for my fancy birthday dinner last weekend! The food was incredible and I must admit I could have eaten even more than the ten (!!) plates we shared. Each plate is very small and seems to be a taste for two people. Note that the staff is great about letting you know about which items are safely gluten free. However, dishes cannot be adapted to be gluten free (I was told). Still, there was plenty of deliciousness to enjoy - so much sushi!
Heading to Maine for a late-summer or early-fall trip? Make sure to stop by Spinnakers in Wells for the best fried seafood, period. We went earlier in August and inhaled a lot of fried clams and immediately wanted to go back to try the rest of the menu. I have a feeling we will be going a few more times before winter arrives.
Shop
Living Proof No Frizz Humidity Shield - a hairdresser used this product on me last week after I got a blowout on the most humid day of the year. I happily had perfect hair all afternoon and night! Definitely going to purchase…
Firmly in the Stylish Sneaker Club for weekends, but I can’t help that I also love a good flat boot. These Chelsea Boots from Vince have majorly piqued my interest.
Thoughts on fuzzy jackets? I’m slightly on the fence, but I do really like this Teddy Sherpa Bomber Jacket. Too much? Or just enough? 😏
Enjoy!
